COMPOSTABLE OR BIODEGRADABLE?
TIMING IS THE DIFFERENCE
These two terms often mistaken for synonyms have a substantial difference, essential not to fall into errors when it comes to sorting waste.
A biodegradable product is not automatically compostable.
For the sake of clarity, let’s begin with a definition: what is called biodegradable is any material that can be disassembled in chemical compounds like water, carbon dioxide or methane, by bacteria, sunlight or other natural physical agents. Most materials coming from the natural world are biodegradable, but European law establishes specific limits: to be biodegradable, a product must decompose by 90% in 6 months. What is defined compostable (convertible in compost, a natural fertiliser), on the other hand, is a biodegradable material which is also decomposable in less than 3 months, according to law EN13432.
When it comes to recycling, it’s necessary to check compostability certifications before throwing a biodegradable product in the organic waste bin. Biodegradable plastics, for example, need to be sorted anyways in the plastic recycling bin.
COMPOSTABLE OR NATURAL?
These two terms also are not synonyms. Not all compostable materials are natural: some have an artificial or synthetic origin.
Natural fibres
Obtained from crop production (cotton, linen, hemp) or animals (silk and wool).
Artificial fibres
Extracted from chemical and mechanical manufacturing of wood and bamboo cellulose (like viscose). This chemical transformation involves the use of caustic soda, known for being carcinogenic.
Synthetic fibres
Produced by men using chemical compounds derived from petroleum (like plastic).
Our products have been designed and developed to have zero environmental impact. All of our products are manufactured in 100% cotton wool, an organic fibre, growing from the soil. Its blooming cycle is eco-sustainable, without cutting down the trees or resorting the use of chemistry.
